From September onwards, Atlantic Grey Seals (identified by their long heads and Roman noses) breed on the Pembrokeshire coast, especially on the islands of Skomer and Ramsey, and in some inaccesible rocky mainland coves. They give birth to a single pup between September and December every year. Pups are suckled on the beaches for the first three weeks before the venture forth and try swimming for the first time. The numbers of Grey Seals in British waters have doubled since 1960 to over 80,000 animals.
